    5 lessons from 5 years
Today marks exactly five years (interestingly with the same order of days) since I took a bold decision to relocate to Kabwe, Central Zambia, about 130 kilometres away from the capital, Lusaka, which I vowed never to leave (yes, Lusaka was Zambia for me at the time and everything else was a mere peripheral appendage). Though the move was daunting at the time due to the usual misgivings that come with such a major shift, it turned out to be nothing but a journey of learning. Here are five insights from my five-year journey for anyone looking to take a bold step:
✅ Leave your comfort zone. Cliche. But yes, your comfort zone will always limit your growth. There is no growth in a comfort zone. This zone is not always a physical one. Think about it.
✅ Fear of the unknown is just that: the unknown! Half the time we worry about things that will not happen. The adage goes: we have nothing to fear but fear itself. Looking back five years, some of the fears were plain stupid. Let’s just say, I’m still here five years later.
✅ Plan, plan, plan. Everything must align with your 5, maybe 10 maybe even 20-year goal. Success somewhat happens in incremental steps.
✅ Sometimes your network is your networth. Cliche again. But yes sometimes you’ll only breakthrough by making the most of your network or contacts. So be deliberate about it. After five years of somewhat starting over in a completely new space and field, I cannot over emphasise this.
✅ Cut yourself some slack. Even superman takes a nap sometimes. It’s okay (and even important) to take a step back, look at and enjoy the journey. Have fun while at. Enjoy the journey, do not delay your happiness to the destination.
