If you are a starting out as an online freelancer in any niche—it could be writing, designing, marketing etc—here is a free tip that will definitely help you.
👇
As a newbie, after acquiring that digital or tech skill, your next move might be to try and get high paying jobs—okay, draw in a deep breath.
Allow me to disappoint you NOW.
You are most likely a freelancer with:
1. No portfolio.
2. No case studies.
3. No experience. The best thing you would do for yourself at this stage is to actively volunteer yourself to small brands or clients for FREE or on a small agreed fee.
Why VOLUNTEER?
I’ll tell you.
Most reputable brands would most likely go for an individual who has experience and expertise on the role rather than a person who just acquired the skill.
Here are a few reasons why volunteering might be the best option for YOU as a freelancer who recently acquired a skill:
1. It’s a great way to build up your portfolio.
2. It gives you experience working with real clients.
3. It helps you network with other professionals.
4. It allows you to experiment with different approaches and strategies.
5. It gives you something to talk about in interviews and networking events.
6. It shows potential clients that you’re a team player.
Dear newbie freelancer,
Work for free first.
Build yourself and your portfolio.
Develop your strengths.
THEN, raise your standards and pitch yourself to your desired brands the right way.
But, I must tell you, it would take time.
Real growth takes time.
